A huge barrier to doing meaningful anti-racist work is a lack of racial literacy. As we see more anti-racism work being done across organisations, it is clear that we lack the depth of understanding needed to do this work properly. How can we write an anti-racism strategy if we don’t really understand what race is? How can we break down systemic oppression if we can’t even say the words white supremacy out loud?
What do we really know about race? Why do we talk about privilege so much? Decolonising our minds is a process of constant learning. Without a deep foundational knowledge of the systems we are trying to dismantle we are doomed to replicate these systems in our attempts to end them.
We need a learning revolution!
#BAMEOnline Scholar is all about collective learning - through a series of essays, events and videos we will break down some of the most misused, misapplied and misunderstood concepts in anti-racism.
